What Is Generational Trauma—Really?
Wisdom Nugget:
Generational trauma isn’t always what happened. Sometimes it’s what never got healed, never got talked about, and never got accepted.
Let’s get one thing straight right out of the gate:
You don’t need to have a murderer in your family tree to be carrying generational trauma.
You might be carrying the weight of sh*t that was never even spoken out loud—the shame, the silence, the rules you never questioned because they were never up for discussion.
Let me say this louder for the perfectionists in the back:
Generational trauma is not just passed down—it’s passed through behaviors, beliefs, and bullsh*t.
So… What Is Generational Trauma?
Most people think trauma has to be big, dramatic, and headline-worthy.
We’re talking war, abuse, addiction, death, tragedy.
Sure, those things are traumas.
But here’s the truth bomb:
Trauma is anything that overwhelms your system and doesn’t get resolved.
And generational trauma?
That’s just unresolved trauma on repeat, passed down like a family recipe for dysfunction.
Sometimes it looks like:
- Chronic guilt disguised as being a “good girl.”
- Hustle culture wrapped in a bow called “work ethic.”
- Emotional shutdown sold as “strength.”
- Toxic independence labeled as “resilience.”
Final Sip of Truth (for Part 1):
You can’t change what you haven’t faced.
And you can’t heal what you’re still calling “normal.”
Next time? We’re digging deeper. You’ll learn how to spot inherited trauma even if your childhood was “fine.” Spoiler: fine isn’t freedom.
I love all you people!
