Tea and a Truth Biscuit:
Apparently, My Toes Ruin Luxury, Uh, NOPE!
Well, would you look at that! There I am, barefoot in the middle of a massive luxury shopping mall in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
Surrounded by designer stores, expensive merchandise, and people going about their business.
And guess what?
NOT ONE PERSON GAVE A SH*T ABOUT MY BARE FEET!
No security guards rushing over. No lectures about health and safety. Nobody was suggesting I was ruining their shopping experience.
Imagine that! A whole mall full of people managing to enjoy themselves despite the horrifying sight of ten naked toes.
Now, why do I find this so f*cking funny?
Because not so long ago, Silversea Cruises, a luxury cruise line, decided that my bare feet were potentially interfering with the comfort and enjoyment of their other guests.
Apparently, when you’re paying thousands of dollars for a luxury cruise, the sight of another passenger’s bare feet might be enough to send your entire vacation straight down the toilet. Supposedly, Karen was going to lose her lunch if she had to dine with my bare feet exposed. (Sidebar: F*ck that! Hey, Karen, get a life!) Never mind the spectacular scenery, gourmet meals, or five-star service. There’s a barefoot woman at breakfast! Somebody alert the captain!
And yet, here I am in one of Kuala Lumpur’s enormous luxury malls, surrounded by shoppers, employees, and security personnel, and nobody seems remotely concerned about what is or isn’t on my feet.
What a concept. People minding their own business!
Here’s what I find particularly interesting. My feet haven’t changed. My sincerely held religious beliefs haven’t changed. I’m the same barefoot woman I’ve been for more than a decade. The only thing that changed was who decided my feet were a problem in the first place.
And that brings me right back to something I’ve been unpacking throughout this whole Silversea bullsh*t.
When did somebody else’s personal discomfort become a legitimate reason to dictate how another human being gets to live?
You don’t have to understand why I go barefoot. You don’t have to agree with it. Hell, you can think I’m completely nuts. F*ckity-do-dah, take a number and get in line!
But why should any of that matter?
I wasn’t asking anyone else to take off their shoes. I wasn’t demanding special treatment. I was simply existing as myself, enjoying my day, and doing absolutely nothing to interfere with anyone else’s.
Which is exactly what happened in Kuala Lumpur.
No confrontation. No explanation. No permission slip required.
Just a barefoot woman having a lovely afternoon with her best friend in a beautiful mall.
Wisdom Nugget: Maybe real luxury has nothing to do with designer labels, expensive cruise ships, or five-star surroundings. Maybe it’s simply being able to enjoy your life without somebody else making your perfectly harmless choices their f*cking problem.
And isn’t that the way it’s supposed to be?
I love all you people.
