Tea and a Truth Biscuit: The Hero We Never Saw Coming
The other day I held a rat.
Yep… a rat.
Not just any rat. An African Giant Pouched Rat trained by APOPO here in Cambodia.
If you had told me a few years ago I’d be standing barefoot, smiling while holding a giant rat, I probably would have laughed my ass off.
But here’s the thing…
This “disgusting” creature has likely saved more human lives than most people ever will.
These incredible animals are trained to sniff out landmines buried beneath the earth. They’re light enough that they don’t trigger the explosives, yet their noses are so sensitive they can detect the chemicals hidden underground.
One scratch of the ground…
…and another family gets to walk safely.
Another child gets to play.
Another farmer gets to plant crops without wondering if today is the day everything changes.
All because of…
…a rat.
It got me thinking.
How many heroes have we overlooked simply because we judged the package?
We judge people by the color of their skin.
Their tattoos.
Their politics.
Their religion.
Their accent.
Their weight.
Their job.
Their past.
We decide who they are before we’ve ever discovered what they’re capable of.
Maybe we’ve been sniffing for the wrong things.
The HeroRAT doesn’t care what someone looks like.
It simply does what it was born and trained to do…
Serve.
Maybe that’s the invitation for all of us.
Less judgment.
More curiosity.
Less labeling.
More learning.
Today I didn’t just meet a rat.
I met a reminder that extraordinary often comes wrapped in the most unexpected package.
And maybe…
Just maybe…
So do we.
I love all you people.
